Self Defense for women and children,

I was born and raised in the midwest. I have been happily married for 27 years and we have two sons- one in the Air Force fulltime and the other in high school. I have been employed at a large health care center as long as I have been married and currently work at a cardiology clinic.

I obtained my black belt in TaeKwo Do in my late 30s. I have lead workshops on self defense with children and young adults. I believe that self defense starts with self awareness, the ability to thoroughly sense your surroundings. I teach basic avoidance behaviors and I also stress knowing what action to take when threatened.

My website is: SelfDefense-4-Women.com

Contrary to the title I believe that anyone- no matter their gender- can learn from these techniques.

The number of unmarked police cars grows as police departments all around the country attempt to catch more aggressive drivers. They are known as “slick tops” – those with markings but no lights on top- ghost cars, stealth units or by CBers as “brown paper wrappers”. The increased use of these vehicles have made it easier for criminals to impersonate officers. Which puts them in unique position to commit all sorts of crimes.r

Self defense starts with self awareness. You should always be conscious of what’s happening around you. Let’s say you are out for your daily exercise walk. I try to walk for twenty minutes during my lunch break from work. I work for a large medical center that advocates this activity by mapping out indoor routes, through the various hallways, tunnels and building connections complete with mileage. If I’m walking indoors due to adverse weather (which is 75% of the time here in the upper Midwest) I do wear my MP3 player.

A healthy relationship is built on mutual respect. This is true of all types of relationships; your family, you friends and your co-workers. You can't choose your family or, in most cases your co-workers, so you hopefully learn to get along with them. Your friends you can choose. You can choose to accept their short comings as they choose to accept yours- yes, you have some.

Psychic self defense sounds pretty mysterious. The fact is that most of us have some psychic ability. Some will call it a sixth sense, intuition, instinct even a hunch. Some of us are just more observant than others; paying attention. If your sense of hearing, smell or sight is acute you may be able to predict an inevitable event. For example, if you can hear better than your companions, you would be the first to know that a train is coming, that someone is approaching on foot, that a flock of ducks are flying by. You may smell a gas leak, a wild animal or a woman’s lingering perfume.

According to Dr. Lenore E. Walker, a prominent expert on battered women, a woman must experience at least two complete battering cycles before she can be labeled a “battered woman”. The cycle has three phases. First the tension-building phase, followed by the explosion or acute battering incident, then the calm, loving respite- often referred to as the honeymoon phase. Battered woman syndrome describes a set of symptoms found in woman living in battering relationships. The four general characteristics are: - The woman believe it’s her fault

What effect does Battered Woman Syndrome have on children? An authoritative study states that children who witness domestic violence but at not battered themselves show behavioral and emotional problems similar to those experienced by physically abused children and may also suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome later. One study states that witnessing violence between parents is a more predictor of future violence than being of victim of child abuse.

Let’s examine the legal implications of Battered Woman Syndrome. BWS was first proposed in the 1970’s. According to Joe Wheeler Dixon, PhD, JD BWS appears to be the product of legal advocacy and not science. BWS seems to owe its existence to the needs of legal advocates to support and justify claims by battered women who have killed (their batterers). The defense revolves around the woman’s mental deficiency and helplessness. Learned helplessness can be induced in lab animals, but no sudden rage or aggression.

As mysterious as psychic self defense sounds, it is an intuition skill we all can hone and polish once we understand it. I’m not saying that some of us don’t actually have mind reading capabilities. If you did, then you would have a far greater advantage over most of us already, and probably wouldn’t be interested in reading this page.
