One of the big fears of my stop smoking clients is that they will gain weight when the stop smoking. It turns out, the opposite is true. Based on a four year study at the University of Navarra in Spain, http://www.unav.es/english/news/260110.html continued smoking could lead to greater weight gain. According to the research, the idea that smoking helps people lose weight by suppressing appetites is a myth. The research showed that smoking could cause people to put on more we

I was doing a presentation about entering hypnosis as a profession to a group of sixty or so teenagers, when it happened. I mentioned that I had helped a number of people get rid of unusual fears, and one of the young women in the audience stood up and announced that she had an unusual fear. Then she insisted that I help her with it right then and there. I hesitated, because there was only a brief bit if time left before another group was due to use the room. However, she wa

In one of Edgar Alan Poe's short stories, a stolen letter was hidden out in the open on the desk of one of the characters. Because it was in an envelope from another writer, the searchers looked at it, but never thought to check inside the envelope. In a similar way, it is possible to hide hypnotic commands and suggestions inside of normal conversation. These commands go unnoticed by the conscious minds of a listener, but they are understood and acted upon as hypnotic command

Wouldn't it be nice if you could directly communicate with your unconscious mind and just ask it to change a habit, or engage your creative resources to resolve a sticky problem? Well, there is a time honored hypnosis technique that opens the door for doing just that. In technical jargon, the hypnotherapist assists the client in establishing “ideomotor signals”. Ideomotor signals are answers coming in the form of physical movements directly from the unconscious mind as yes/n

There are no absolute certainties for a hypnotherapist while working with a client. Clients who request hypnosis for common issues like stopping smoking may need the hypnotherapist to use a creative approach because of their unique personality needs. Some years ago, I was gathering information from Eva, (not her real name) about her smoking habits. And, she let me know in no uncertain terms, that smoking was something that “no one could take away from her”. I have run across

A great many people are afraid that someone else can control their minds with hypnosis. In truth, hypnosis gives people more control over their own minds. People can learn to eliminate a fear, stop bleeding at will, and immediately stop addictive cravings with hypnosis. And, it really is something that is learned. If it were simply a matter of bossing our minds around, all those years of negative self talk would have perfected our character and habits long ago. We all prac

A great many people see stage shows or movies and come to the conclusion that being hypnotized must include some profound and dramatic sensations. Perhaps they have seen a hypnosis stage show participant become so physically rigid that the hypnotist can put them between two chairs and stand on them with no apparent effort of discomfort to the participant. It certainly seems like it would have to include some very strange feelings. But, as with many things in life, appearance

One of the most powerful ways to enhance the effectiveness of a first hypnosis session is for the client to initially have an obviously hypnotic experience. It is standard practice for many hypnotherapists to have a new client do the balloon and bucket exercise, in which the client imagines a bucket of wet sand in one outstretched hand and that the other hand is attached to a big helium balloon. When one arm moves up, and the other down, it is undeniable that something unusua

Practicing hypnotherapists hear many peculiar statements from smokers who ask for help in quitting. The idea that cigarettes could be someone's "friend" is just one of them. One man believed that he couldn't write music unless he was smoking. Others have been convinced that they couldn't relax unless they were inhaling tobacco fumes. Those people were suffering from what I have come to call "tobacco hypnosis". They had hypnotized themselves into some odd beliefs about the eff
