***Beyond the Pain of Divorce and Other Losses

“Give sorrow words: The grief that does not speak whispers the oe’r fraught heart, and bids it break.”(Shakespeare, The Tragedie of Macbeth, 1892)

***Autumn Leaves

Life if full of transitions and as this one goes; summer into autumn may not be a highly dramatic Neiman Marcus moment. It may be a more practical down to earth restocking of our shelves and inner selves. What is important here is the attitude you bring to the restocking. If you do it mindfully this seasonal transition provides an opportunity to live life in a more meaningful way with eyes wide open. If we are not mindful summer can merge into autumn finding us picking up the pace of school, games, hunting, parties etc in an automatic headless, unfulfilling way.

***Want a Less Stressful Summer?

I once heard George Carlin the comedian address the topic of vacations, and how people handle their “stuff.” People usually take a smaller version of their stuff on vacation and sequentially smaller versions to their hotel room, or to the beach etc. He was hysterical; resonating with the need we have for the familiar in order to feel more comfortable. Reflecting on this I wondered if it is the same with our stress level? Do we take a smaller version of our stress with us on vacation? Are we such creatures of habit that we unconsciously take along some stress to stay in our comfort zone?

***What Does Your Busyness Really Mean?

“There is more to life than increasing its speed” (Gandhi & Desai, 1957) Life can be likened to a deep forest and on occasion we get lost in creating our path through it. If we are determined to find our way, it is necessary to face the fears and doubts that are always lurking, keeping us stuck when we do not face them. We cannot wait until the day arrives when there is an absence of fears and doubts, as it does not happen. If the forest is a metaphor for life, why do so many of us stay close to the entry not venturing in?

***Whose Beliefs Are You Believing?

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves. Rainer Maria Rilke

***Change Is The Only Constant

Since change is the only constant in our lives, why is it so frightening to choose to change? Often it is thrust upon us and we didn’t see it coming. It may come in a way that cuts us off at the knees, such as having life, as we know it obliterated, like a tornado or hurricane. Somehow when such happens, time and time again we observe people having the courage and determination to reach down into their reservoir of resilience to deal with catastrophe. Where did all their courage, fearlessness, faith, determination come from, we ask ourselves. How were they able to do it?

***Free At Last!

“Is the life I’m living the life that wants to live in me?” Parker Palmerrnr

Money, What Is Your Story?

Many of our cultural beliefs about money are confusing and conflicted. In addition to cultural pressures, we have familial beliefs, that are unexamined, “hand me downs.” In the book “The Road Less Traveled”, Scott Peck alleges that parents give children a second hand God to worship, a God in keeping with their beliefs and practices. Money is another area where powerful beliefs, and myths are passed down. How many times have you heard; “well in our family we do it this way, or we do such and such,” as if it were the only way, with no room allowed for diverse ideas.

It's That Time Of Year

The last two months of the year usually finds us in a frantic state of shopping, decorating, cooking and traveling, so is it any wonder we are more stressed than cheerful. Having so many "to do" lists, we are wound up and too exhausted to enjoy that which normally makes us happy, as in cherished traditions and intimate family gatherings. There is an underlying expectation at this time of the year, that everybody is supposed to be cheerful, and to some degree caught up in the frenetic activity. The external pressure of being merry creates an unrealistic goal for many of us.
