Entry-Level Job Seeking Mistakes To Avoid
Here are 3 mistakes that you can easily avoid today to help keep you on the right track.- Not Preparing For The Interview
I already know that just about everybody already does a little bit of interview prep, but I can tell you now, that it is not enough. For entry-level job seekers, there is no such thing as over-preparing. Let me put it this way, have you considered the following?
- Company research
- Interviewer research
- What to wear
- Job Application
- Body Language
- The Receptionist
- References
- And these are just to name a few!! You have to think of every angle of interview prep and actually be prepared. So, how do you prepare then? You have to do a little bit of everything. Networking, reading blogs, reading the newspapers, talking with friends and family, etc... Don't be afraid to put yourself out there.
- Not Networking Now, I know! Everyone tells you to network, but you don't even know where to start or how. Why do you need to network? Today has a very competitive job market and just applying to a job doesn't cut it anymore. Anybody can apply to a job; how does that differentiate you? The obvious answer... it doesn't. Get out there and network. Ask your parents who they know, your neighbors, friends from sports or clubs... the list goes on. The point is that you need to expand the amount of people that you know.
- Your Resume Is Weak! How do you improve your resume? Well, as a college student, you have access to a career services department. Have you gone to them and had them help you with your resume? If the answer is yes or no, chances are the resume is not a high-caliber resume! Why is this? Majority of the people who work in a college career services department are people who have been there majority of their careers. They are out-of-touch with current hiring trends and usually never had experience in an HR department. What do you do instead? Easy! Reach out to resume experts.
