Healing When Your Senses Are Failing You

One of my readers asked how she could regain her hearing. Since many of us loose acuity of one or more of our senses throughout our lives, her question could be significant for many of us to consider. Physically, how one regains hearing is as specific as how one lost it. There are dozens of physical causes for hearing loss and other sensory deprivations. Your healing approach is likely to be dependent upon the physical cause.
That said, regardless of the physical root, when you are loosing or have lost the use of one of your senses, there is a question you probably want to ask yourself as you begin on any course of physical healing. Though it is a difficult question to ask, you probably need to inquire about the emotional or spiritual cause of your hearing loss.
I have known two people in my life that lost their eye-sight, completely. Both of them were medicine people and for them the loss of their seeing abilities allowed them to see even more clearly in the spiritual realms. In these cases, one of the primary spiritual causes of their loss may very well have been to increase their spiritual capacity to see.
One of these medicine people was known to have picked up red-hot stones for sweat lodge with his bare hands. If he was seeing into the energetic world, just imagine how differently he must have seen those hot rocks and the world around him than how most of us see. Before assuming the loss of one of our senses is a problem, I believe there is wisdom in assessing whether or not it might actually be a gift.
If you are clear that healing is the proper response to your loss, then I recommend healing emotionally and spiritually as you approach physical solutions. When your senses are failing you, you have an opportunity to consider if there is something you don’t want to see, hear, feel or experience. You can consider whether your body is aging and whether or not the loss is appropriate in your opinion, and especially if you were born with loss, consider if there is a karmic lesson awaiting your discovery. Have you challenged yourself in some way in order to discover your own potential?
Some of us actually induce the losses we experience. There are those of us that lost some of our hearing by standing in front of too many blaring speakers at rock concerts. I can’t help but wonder, what we trying to prove by pushing our bodies that hard? Or what did we not want to hear that we tried to blast out our capacity to hear what was really going on in our lives?
This is the time to ask yourself some difficult, yet important questions. In this way, if you choose to address the potential physical cause, your spirit and psyche can be in full alignment with your decision to heal. If you don’t ask yourself these questions and only approach the physical condition, you may find yourself unconsciously sabotaging your best efforts. Internal sabotage occurs because the underlying wounded emotional and spiritual parts of you are demanding to be recognized. So why not begin your process by attending to these aspects of you before or as you begin active physical healing efforts.
One of the most beautiful healing stories I’m familiar with in regard to sensory lost was shared by the author, Napoleon Hill, about his son. Blair Hill was born with no sign of ears. In the early 1900’s the best that the doctor could tell Napoleon and his wife was that he expected the boy would probably be both deaf and mute. Blair’s father was not willing to accept that diagnosis. He decided that his son would be able to hear and speak. Although he didn’t know how this was going to happen, he instilled in his son his own belief that he would be able to hear. A way would be found.
Napoleon explains that he desired this for his son more than anything else. Here he speaks to the depth of his commitment, “From that desire I never receded, not for a second.”
As the boy grew older, they noticed that he had a slight degree of hearing. Napoleon cleverly reinforced the boy’s desire to hear, while simultaneously stimulating the boy’s faith in himself and teaching him that his perceived loss would actually be an asset. The boy learned to hear and speak, and during his last week of college, he was introduced to a hearing device that opened up his world. Blair created a marketing plan specifically to communicate to the hard of hearing for the company that created the device. The company hired him, and he successfully helped thousands of people who previously had limited hearing.
Theoretically, Blair Hill should not have been able to hear at all. And yet, his father’s desire and faith, and ultimately his own, opened him to a world of hearing, speaking and service to others. You can read this inspiring story for yourself by buying the book, “Think and Grow Rich.”
I’m not willing to put limits on possibilities for healing. I’ve seen too many “miracles” to do that. I do know that in order to heal, from a spiritual and emotional base, your subconscious and conscious desires must be in alignment, you must have a burning desire, and solid faith that it will happen.

It is not so easy to feel healing when it is happening on multiple levels below the surface of our awareness, when we’re already trying to move on to the next session, the next run, or the next challenging week. It is b
