Many people looking for work still lack some of the basics interview skills required to succeed and win the job. This is all the more surprising when you consider the fact that unemployment is at it’s highest level for many years. Getting a job offer really is dependant on the candidate giving a truly great interview performance and in order to do this in the current market excellent interview skills are vital. So how good are your interview skills? Ok so let’s go over some basic interview skills. How good are you with answering the interview questions? How well able are you to structure an good interview answer? Do you know how to dress properly for the interview? Do you know how to introduce yourself and how to use body language to create rapport? All of these are just some of the many interview skills you need to consider approaching any job interview. Here’s some more to keep in mind. As you know the very best thing you can do is be prepared! On the day dress appropriately, gentlemen, shirt and tie with trousers, women, dress slacks or skirt and blouse or a dress that is not too revealing, with at least short sleeves. This one is big! Turn off your cell phones! There is nothing more distracting or disturbing to a new employer than your cell phone ringing off! The interview is short and focused time and you want to devote yourself to it. If you do have an emergency or transportation issue the day of your interview, call them and explain as soon as possible, explain the situation and kindly ask them for another interview. Being up front about a complication will show your reliability and honesty. How to to acquire winning Interview Skills and Why? Ok, so it all may seem very simple however the smallest mistake can cost you the job. Why take that chance? Participating in some interview skills training can make the difference between getting the job or not. Interview skills training is often provided by unemployment offices or employment agencies to boost your confidence in speaking during an interview. You want to appear self assured, but not cocky. Most people are very nervous about saying something wrong or inappropriate, which often stems from a lack of practice. Interview skills training will have you participate in mock interviews and offer realistic and helpful suggestions and advice that will improve you chances of winning the job you want. Practice makes perfect Remember, interview skills usually do not come easily to most people and they require practice. Training can help you focus on appearing friendly and approachable. You may not realize but when we have your arms crossed and torso hunched you appear as though you have something to hide or you are unapproachable. Have a somewhat relaxed demeanor and hold your head up to convey confidence. Be yourself, but don't be too forthcoming. Give only as much information as they need to know for now. Keep it professional and do not start making conversation about your favourite football team just yet. You want to go into the interview feeling confident and this is where interview skills training will help the most. You will come to the interview with your head up, resumes in hand, references available and feeling calm and sure of your success.
