How to prevent constipation Constipation can be relieved by a diet high in fiber, fruits, vegetables and whole grains add bulk to waste, making it easier to move. Abundant fluids and a balanced diet of carbohydrates, protein and fat are necessary for digestive function smoothly. Water makes up three quarters of the human body and is essential in the digestion reaction and every body. Too much fiber as whole foods such as bran, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, has also been associated with a lower incidence of bowel cancer. Eating more processed and packaged foods results in unbalanced meals that are high in carbohydrates and low in fiber. Convenience foods are also rich in preservatives and artificial coloring and low nutritional value. Exercise improves metabolism and digestion The digestive system is composed of smooth muscle and skeletal muscle as it is affected by exercise, regular activity helps facilitate healthy digestion. Aging also affects the digestive health, the body's metabolism slows and decreases muscle tone of the GI tract. The elderly may not be as physically active and unable to prepare nutritious meals or eating. Pregnancy, stress and hormonal changes are other factors that cause changes in bowel habits. Some prescription and drugs without prescription health supplements can cause side effects that include diarrhea or constipation. Antibiotics, pain medication, blood pressure medicines, antacids and iron supplements are some examples. Causes of diarrhea A serious cause of acute diarrhea is viral and bacterial infections. Certain bacteria produce a toxin that causes intestinal cells and the release of salt water, overload the capacity of the intestine to absorb the fluid. These bacteria include Escherichia coli and salmonella, which can occur in undercooked or impure Food & Beverage. Some viruses also interfere with absorption fluid damaging the mucous membrane lining the intestine. Parasites that inflame the intestine and interferes with absorption can also be contracted through contaminated food and water. Avoid coffee and caffeinated soft drinks that are dehydrating and can aggravate the intestines even more, to stop diarrhea.
