What is an angel? When discussing this, it is helpful to look at some definitions of the word and its variations.
The Dictionary defines an angel as:
“Spiritual Being attendant on God”
“A Spiritual, Celestial Being, superior to Man in power and intelligence”
“God’s Messengers”
The Catholic dictionary defines an angel as being:
“A pure Spirit, created by God, called Angel because some are employed by God as messengers to Man” (Greek: Angelos, messenger)
The Dictionary describes an Archangel as:
“An Angel ranked above the highest rank in the Celestial Hierarchy”
The Catholic Dictionary defines an Archangel as:
“….spirits who compose the second choir in the angelic hierarchy”
or more generally, “any Angel of higher rank – thus all of the higher orders of Angels”
Man has always believed that there were beings or entities, not like themselves, who were in and around his space – but not on the same plane or vibration of existence. There were several different forms of these ‘spirits’.
Nature Spirits
The indigenous peoples have always believed that nature spirits inhabited the Earth. These spirits inhabit mountains, lakes, trees, etc and have different forms and roles to suit each case. More modern societies named these spirits as Fairies, Gnomes, Elves, Brownies or even Leprechauns. The ancient writings suggest that, although living in a higher plane than the physical, these nature spirits (or Elementals) are at a low level of spiritual evolution and have no will of their own. They act as the architects/builders of nature as we know it, under direction from a higher level. Their next stage of progression is to manifest as inert matter – rocks etc. – before, over eons of time, evolving through the plant, animal and human kingdoms.
Ghosts
Another much recorded group of ‘outsiders’ is the ‘ghost’. This group includes wraiths and those entities that are contacted by mediums. Many believe that the spirits of the dead are consciously responsible for all the phenomena that are experienced in this regard. The ancient wisdom suggests that the real spirit of the dead – its higher self – moves on and has no contact back to the physical plane. But, the mortal shells of their earthly life can exist for some time before disintegrating. These forms do exist in a different plane of reality that is of a higher vibration than the physical. However, this – as with the nature spirits – does not imply any evolutionary or intellectual superiority. Indeed, as disintegrating shells of humanity, they may appear to act like their previous, complete man but lack the higher part of his nature and can only communicate ‘old news’ or that which is gleaned from the medium or audience.
Angels
The other main group of hidden entities that has been reported throughout history is the Angels. These are beings of light that live in the higher vibrational planes and form part of a hierarchy of beings that serve to implement the Divine Will. Angels are frequently mentioned in the Bible and are referred to, albeit using different terminology, in the ancient wisdom and in the writings of most old religions.
