The reason why having a strong and healthy ego is often viewed negatively despite its potential benefit for mental health and success in life is that the ego itself is risky. The ego always strives for self-importance. Therefore, it seems positive when it is valued, respected, and listened to; but as soon as someone disrespects or devalues the ego in any way, whether it is at work, home, or in a social setting, it could react fiercely and very negatively. It could become despondent and angry, and the longer the negative effects are allowed to linger, the greater the damage to the ego. There are two types of ego that people have. Every one of us has an ego, but how we use it will determine the type of happiness or unhappiness we draw from it. The ego also determines how we react in different situations and with different people. Having a positive ego can bring us happiness, even in the face of adversity. When we maintain a positive attitude, we can experience calmness, inner peace, and contentment. On the other hand, a negative ego can bring us nothing but misery, pain, unhappiness, and uneasiness. This negative ego can cause us to feel suffocated and bothered internally. Furthermore, we may experience poor health due to the tension caused by this negative ego. It is important to recognise the impact that our ego can have on our overall well-being and strive to maintain a positive mindset. Therefore, it is important to maintain a positive ego in every situation and with everyone we encounter. How to maintain a positive ego? 1) Begin by holding onto the intention of not hurting any living being to the slightest extent through your thoughts, speech, or actions. If you constantly keep this inner intention within you, you will always be happy, and so will everyone around you. 2) Always approach every situation with a positive mindset. For example, if you are on your way to work for an important meeting and the traffic is bad, instead of getting stressed, worried, and angry and blaming everyone, maintain a positive mindset. Stay calm, look for ways to overcome traffic issues, accept the situation, and make a positive effort to get to work on time. 3) Be open-minded. In any situation, don’t judge it to be negative at the offset; rather, be open-minded and see how you can overturn the situation into a positive outcome. 4) See the best in others. Don’t allow past opinions to get in the way of your relationships. Just aim to see the best in the people you meet. We all have a choice in our lives to maintain either a positive or a negative ego. When we choose to uphold a positive ego, even when everything in our life seems to be going against us or people may be making life difficult for us, we experience positive results only. This is the ‘law of nature’. In the same token, a negative ego simply invites unhappiness and suffering amidst all the luxuries and comforts present in one’s life.
