Why you should have a mentor?

A poet once wrote on his essay about the Painting of Modern Life, "be very sure that this man, such as I have depicted him, this solitary, gifted with an active imagination, carelessly journeying across the great human desert aims for something other than the fugitive pleasure of circumstance.” By pondering this quote, one may be tempted to say that this poet was also an artist who was trying to explain his art work, expressing details of what he had just painted. (I imagine, if I read this to any artist, he would want to see the beautiful art work I’d made.) But in actuality, this poet was solving a challenge he had faced for a long time but failed miserably. The challenge was on failure for artists to create modern life art work. The poet knew that paintings, if expressed in modern daily life could have a tremendous influence over people’s lives. He had tried criticizing the artistic work by his normal routine essays, expressing how the artists were out of touch with the modern life and how they were misusing the great work of art by expressing only the past. His criticism failed to give him any pleasing results. Deciding not to settle for the results he deviated from his norms and took a positive step in challenging the artists to his thinking. He decided to mentor them through one of his essays. By this essay, he made himself an artist and was able to call to attention the need for artists to use active imagination to understand and express modern life in creating art. This was the turning point of his challenge as many artists were struck by his expertise and quickly turned to modern art creation. All he needed was to act differently and by expressing the beautiful modern art work as his own, he was able to succeed his way to influencing many artists to actively pursue a new goal in modern art. rnWe face enormous challenges today in our lives, our companies and our world that could be solved by getting ourselves and others to act differently. The poet acted differently as we can see and he solved that particular challenge. We agree that no one has a specific formula to the right methods that could be applied to end the challenges we face in life, but there are also no challenges too great for everyone. The poet influenced many artists’ minds by acting like a painter himself not because he had the skills and the right method, but because he was determined to achieve that particular goal. rnIt is true that, we are not poets and the problems we face might not apply these tactics or we might not be as skilled to use the same tactic; it is also true that most of us are not that skilled at getting ourselves and others behaving differently. But one thing we can learn from the poet is to not give up trying and if we aren't yet trying, to start trying. The problems that we face today are not different. They are not new, and so there are experts out there whom we could all model ourselves after. We can learn and apply the strategies that they use and make experts of our own. Rarely do people say they are currently experts in this or tomorrow they will be experts in that, but rather they mostly face different challenges by deviating from their existing norms. Behavioral science tells us that we have the power to change just about anything, and that is true and possible if only we are willing to learn and apply different ways to mend the challenges we face.rnWe typically don’t see ourselves capable of becoming experts because we fail to see that the common thread running through most of the accomplishments and tragedies of our lives is our ability to exert skills from others. We all can’t be experts with capital “I”, but we can be. The experience that anyone should have is not by becoming an expert at inventing ways to cope to the things they are less skilled at; but it is by knowing that we exist among surfaces and we should learn from ourselves and others to skate smoothly over them. The best way to learn the undiscovered regions of surfaces (regions of your thoughts and ways) is to learn form an expert. This letter calls for everyone to deviate from their existing give-up norm and learn to face challenges a little beat differently. If you tend to give up and turn new chapters at times when you attempt a couple change strategies and fail miserably, this is a call for you. There is no fun or success at doing the things that are only under your control. rnIn order to succeed in different areas, you should invest and use more energy looking for new and better ways to decipher any challenges. Emerson once said, ‘’what we perceive as the new views at the present time are in fact not new but are the very oldest of thought cast into the molds of these new times. The light is always identical in its composition, but it falls on a great variety of objects and by so falling is first revealed to us, not in its own form, but in theirs.” In like manner, what you perceive as new thoughts, or new challenges or new ways are not actually new. You should never fall into the trap of seeking solace or accepting the challenges as they are or giving up seeking new solutions to what ails you. Many experts know that as humans, left to our own devices, we will never come up with big ideas that solve the problems that afflict us.
