***How Giving and Getting Support Leads To Success

I have always liked the It Takes A Village idea. Getting and giving other women—and men—support when they need it is essential for the success and well being of us all. It is also one of the core principles of The Women’s Code. I was reminded of the wisdom of the village idea two weeks ago, when one of my clients fell off the path, literally, when her bike toppled over and she injured her hip. She couldn’t drive or sit in a chair for longer than a few minutes before feeling pain. Single, with her own business, she faced a daunting task.

CASH is the Essential Four-Letter Word

It’s easy to find people who will critique your business and tell you how to run it. But no one actually explains the hard part: how to make money. I know many women entrepreneurs who, like me, tend to focus on the creative side of business, with a thousand new ideas racing in our brains, but we don’t want to always deal with routine tasks like accounting. But if you can focus on what aspect of your business makes you the most money right now, you’ll have CASH in the bank. With that comes the freedom to experiment, to grow your business in new directions and take it to the next level.

How Women Can Make It To The Top

I read an article today about the famous UCLA Anderson School of Management. The article was featured in Businessweek and takes an uncomfortable look at the difficulties women face to get to the top and be compensated fairly. Sure, that’s nothing new.

3 Steps to Break Negative Patterns

After all the hours of therapy and self-help, self-discoveries, self-realizations, and self-improvements I’ve made, I just identified yet another layer of unresolved issues that I need to deal with. Can you relate? When will we finally be done evolving and growing into the person who we want to be and arrive “there”—at the life we always wanted?

***How Clearly Defined Goals Lead To Success

One of the best arguments I know for setting goals could be an ad for a Global Positioning System (or GPS). Unless you know where you want to go, you can’t figure out a way to get there. It’s true for all aspects of our lives, personal, family and career. Even so, just having goals without defining them, in very specific terms, is a useless exercise.

How Good Habits Will Improve Your Success

Have you ever caught yourself doing something that doesn’t really work, but then you still do it over and over again? I know I have. In our personal and business lives we sometimes find ourselves stuck with ineffective habits—even when we know better. Other times we just do things because we have always done them that way and we don’t think about whether what we do works or not.

***Good Client vs. Bad Client

Have you noticed how much fun you have working with some of your clients while others simply drive you crazy? While you can’t afford to lose any clients in today’s economy, it is still a challenge to be at your very best behavior 24/7. And yet, good customer service is crucial to the growth of your business.

Are Your Business Goals Still On Track?

Can you believe it? This year is already half over. Wasn’t I just in Chicago, at my daughter’s graduation? Now summer is almost here. We all feel it. Time moves so quickly, we become absorbed in the routine of our busy lives, and some things fall through the cracks. Do you remember what your business goals were that you set for yourself at the beginning of the year? Even a few weeks ago? If you intended to grow your business, amp up your career, make more money and attract more clients, how is that going?

Is Feminism An Outdated Term?

Susan Sarandon recently said she doesn’t call herself a feminist anymore because she thinks the label is too stigmatized to be taken seriously. She added that our daughters (mine included) can’t identify with this term anymore because it has negative connotations suggesting “a load of strident bitches….and the identity is used more to minimize you,” Sarandon said. She is hardly alone. I’ve been hearing this a few times lately. Most famously Marissa Mayer from Facebook said the same thing, that the term was outdated and old-fashioned. To me, this is a tough nut to swallow.

Bringing Balance Back Into Our Hectic Lives

If you are like many women, you sometimes feel like exploding because everything in your life seems to pull on you at the same time. We're all on a seesaw trying to balance our emotions, our attitudes, our expectations. I hear from women all the time who say they feel overwhelmed, inadequate and out of balance as they struggle to keep up with career, family, relationships and social obligations. Then there’s financial uncertainty that bears down on many of us. It is a lot to deal with, and women everywhere are feeling it. Anxiety rates among women have soared in the last decade.

Find The Magic Again in What You Do

The road traveled can be a tough one. We all go through some pretty heaving things during our lives that can derail us. It’s happened to me several times, and no matter what is going wrong, if I can remember, even for a second, that life is made up of rhythms or phases that come and go, then I know I’ll get through it, just as I have before.

In business, is it better to be an extrovert or introvert?

Both are essential to running a successful business. Lots of talk these days about introverts and extroverts, generated by the bestselling book Quiet: The Power of the Introvert in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. Herself an introvert, author Susan Cain writes that introverts are “too often denigrated and frequently overlooked in a society that’s held in thrall to an extrovert Ideal--the belief that the ideal self is gregarious, alpha and comfortable in the spotlight.”

Single Parent Survival

We’ve all heard the divorce rate in the US hovers around 50%, but did you know the number of single parent households has tripled since 1960? The Atlantic refers to this as the mysterious and alarming rise of single-parenthood.

***What Makes A Successful Website?

How to make your website a successful marketing tool. Last month a business owner called me to inquire about my coaching services. I took a look at his company website and immediately saw a problem. His visual presentation was a mess, disorganized and confusing with a variety of links to other sites and it was difficult to figure out what his specialty was. I could tell he was surprised by my assessment and he told me he expected his clients to “figure it out.” Besides, he went on, all those linked sites were helping him get business. “Then why are you calling me?” I asked.

Find More Clients The Right Way

Oh the joys of finding new clients. Most business owners, and many of the creative entrepreneurs I work with–decide to look for their new clients, by licensing mailing lists. And then they start to fire off emails and blog posts to people they don’t know. At first look this beats the option of painstakingly doing the background research of each recipient one by one, but be clear that you are basically communicating with people you don’t know, about whom you know nothing, and you are sending them things they didn’t ask for.

***When Being A Narcissist Is A Good Thing

When my daughter was little, she used to yell, “look at me, look at me” for practically everything she did. Standing on one foot, jumping in the pool, she wanted me to look every few seconds and take note of her amazing accomplishments. I was reminded of that human trait when I read an article during a flight to Dublin. It said that people who do well in social media are, for the most part, narcissists.

Can Women Have it All? Here’s What’s Missing In The Debate

By Beate Chelette The recent Atlantic cover story on whether or not women can “have it all” has certainly hit a national nerve. The week after the article came out it had received more than 1.1 million online views. Women and men all around the country are registering their objection or approval of author, mother of two and former State Department official Anne-Marie Slaughter’s premise that the 70s feminist mantra of “having it all” is, in reality, not so easy—and maybe not even possible unless women push for changes in society.

***Five Ways To Avoid Burn Out Through Better Balance

We hear the term balance a lot these days, but what does it really mean? Giving time and attention, in fairly equal measure, to our personal and professional lives is one way to look at balance. Business demands usually top everything else, especially for entrepreneurs who are trying to establish and expand their product or service. It can feel like you’re spinning with everything you need to get done in a day, and then exhausted, you go home to your family or partner and have little energy left to be fully present and engaged with your loved ones. I can relate.

***Rising Like a Phoenix

Sometimes, life smiles on you. It’s the kind of thing that nourishes hope. And then, life turns. And, well – you deal with it. Upon my return from Germany and settling the affairs of my late father, I retained a lawyer—with more money I did not have—to fight the eviction notice I’d received while I was abroad. I found a bankruptcy attorney and prepared myself to let it all go. Even though I had just negotiated a huge deal with Getty Images, the largest such distributor in the world, I realized that I might not make it to see my business turn a profit.

Let’s take a closer look at how making money fits into the day to day planning by the example of the average entrepreneurial business owner. How To Find Acceptance And Move Forward In Your Life

Recently, a client of mine called very upset about some bad news. A lucrative new government work project she believed was set to begin had just fallen through. It wasn’t her fault, the directors in Washington D.C. decided to put the project on hold. Convinced she would not have the cash flow to meet her kids’ tuition, she went into a hole filled with fear and a persistent loop of doomsday thoughts. I know what that’s like. I’ve been there, so for close to an hour, I talked to her about the importance of finding acceptance and disconnecting from her negative, dire thoughts.

How to stay balanced during the not-so-quiet time of the year!

I feel this time of year is paradoxical. It should be the quiet time of the year due to shorter daylight hours. The long evenings should give us more time to relax with family and friends, or even get more sleep. I believe November and December is the ideal time to reflect on the year that has almost ended and to start making plans for the year ahead. This is when we should focus on getting our house in order, both physically and mentally.

Why Setting Goals Is So Important

<img src="https://wikispaces.psu.edu/download/attachments/67017377/smart_goals.gif"> We usually think of the New Year as the time to set goals and figure out what we want to achieve. Of course there are the obvious ones: you want to be happy, have fun, improve personal relationships, be healthy and have your business thrive. That’s all nice and good, but how do you get from saying it to actually achieving them?r
