This new way of thinking about life makes it possible to balance your work life and your family life and allows you to achieve monumental success just like I did, eventually selling my company to Bill Gates, and turning my life completely around.

I want to share with you the results of my struggles and my knowledge. The Women’s Code provides a results-oriented, step-by-step, non-judgmental process that ensures that it’s achievable – for anyone, at any level.

We’ve all heard the divorce rate in the US hovers around 50%, but did you know the number of single parent households has tripled since 1960? Statistics show that 25% of households in the US are spearheaded by single moms, and that number has been steadily increasing. The Atlantic refers to this as the mysterious and alarming rise of single-parenthood.

Why we need to be more aware of our skills and how focusing on each other’s strengths leads to more efficient and productive teams. As I researched the issues at the heart of The Women’s Code, I looked at the reasons and the ways men and women lead differently. My goal was to show how the principles of The Women’s Code will improve communication and leadership in our workplaces. When both men and women apply the three pillars—Awareness, Support, and Collaboration—they become better leaders and are more equipped to quickly climb the corporate ladder.

I feel this time of year is paradoxical. It should be the quiet time of the year due to shorter daylight hours. The long evenings should give us more time to relax with family and friends, or even get more sleep. I believe November and December is the ideal time to reflect on the year that has almost ended and to start making plans for the year ahead. This is when we should focus on getting our house in order, both physically and mentally.

Have you said these words and then realized another hour or two went by before you were finished? You see the disappointed faces of your family, you order take-out dinner again, and you miss yet another yoga class. Instead of spending time on our family and relationship, we find we spend our time with a laptop in our hands as we “quickly” finish this one thing.

Here is a shocking fact. I didn’t always like women. In fact I couldn’t stand most of them. But eventually I realized that their seemingly perfect lives were not so different from mine and not perfect either. We had similar problems in a different shade of grey. Here is an example: I was a single working mother, searching for my perfect fit and upset at how difficult that was. The flipside of this was a woman who dedicated herself to her family and two kids who now felt trapped because she gave up so much.

Many of my private coaching clients are women who want to build a business. But they don’t really know where to start and don’t have a formal education in how to go about setting up their own shop. Let’s go through the steps that are needed to build a successful business. It doesn’t always take a lot of money to start one. Here is a great article on The $100 Startup. It all starts with an idea.

All these years later, I still think about what kind of mother I used to rnbe. It took me three years to become a real one after the birth of my rndaughter. Motherhood is much harder than most will tell you or admit rnto. I couldn’t understand why people said that it was so worth it. I was 32, broke, divorced, my small business in shambles, and the fight for rnmy own survival made being a good mother very difficult. I loved my daughter, of course. Gina was sweet and feisty, a natural performer who liked to sing and dance around the apartment.

Susan Sarandon recently said she doesn’t call herself a feminist anymore because she thinks the label is too stigmatized to be taken seriously. She added that our daughters (mine included) can’t identify with this term anymore because it has negative connotations suggesting “a load of strident bitches….and the identity is used more to minimize you,” Sarandon said. She is hardly alone. I’ve been hearing this a few times lately. Most famously Marissa Mayer from Facebook said the same thing, that the term was outdated and old-fashioned. To me, this is a tough nut to swallow.

It’s not a good sign when the first news of the day means dealing with death. But it got me thinking about the huge impact forgiveness can have in our lives. My father’s brother passed away the other night while I was out celebrating the 4th of July with friends. The two brothers were opinionated men. Both charming, forceful, very smart, and they took on life with maximum force. One went into politics, becoming the mayor of a big city in Germany while I was still living there, and the other, my father, was the CEO of a dairy company in another city.

Oh the joys of finding new clients. Most business owners, and many of the creative entrepreneurs I work with–decide to look for their new clients, by licensing mailing lists. And then they start to fire off emails and blog posts to people they don’t know. At first look this beats the option of painstakingly doing the background research of each recipient one by one, but be clear that you are basically communicating with people you don’t know, about whom you know nothing, and you are sending them things they didn’t ask for.

While I can’t be entirely sure about why that is, but all around us, women are being held to superhuman standards. The common assumption in our culture is that women who are successful in their careers are also great at everything else they do. Or they should be. Their homes look like Martha Stewart’s, they’ve had kids but look like Heidi Klum (who’s had 4 children and wears a size 2) and they can cook up a fantastic gourmet meal to rival chef Gordon Ramsey—and do it with a smile.

You are asking the million-dollar question. All the blood, sweat, tears, doubts, and tons of time and money—and for what? It took me 13 years to become “an overnight success” but when I finally did, the rewards were extraordinary. The popular TV show Shark Tank gives entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their business ideas, and one of the sharks said it generally takes 10 to 15 years to turn the corner! In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell talks about the 10,000 Hour Rule, proposing it takes 10,000 hours of practice before one can master a task.
