How Magnesium is Helping Kids with Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis or CF, is an inherited disease of the secretory glands. Secretory glands include glands that make mucus and sweat. "Inherited" means the disease is passed from parents to children through genes. People who have CF inherit two faulty genes for the disease—one from each parent. The parents likely don't have the disease themselves. CF mainly affects the lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, sinuses, and sex organs. Now for the good news, magnesium supplements can help to relieve many of the breathing problems that are associated with this disease.

Undoing A Lesson

I could not have been in a better position to observe. During a recent class, to my left was my instructor being very clear about ”not jamming” the arm into the body. To my right was a student telling another student “to be sure to jam the arm into the body.” If you are an instructor, have you had this issue before? Despite the well-meaning students (and sometimes other instructors), it can be rather frustrating when another student decides to teach during the class. Again, I have no doubt the intentions are commendable. The results are not always productive.

Is YouTube Hurting Systema

I was in a martial arts store the other day when someone walked in with a black Systema t-shirt. It certainly caught my attention for obvious reasons. I have the only school in town and did not recognize him as one of our students. “Where do you train and who is your teacher?” I was rather curious, assuming he was probably from out of town. “I don’t have a teacher. I ‘video-train” was the reply.

Bringing Awareness?

We are running a 5K to bring awareness to child abuse. We are doing a fund raiser to bring awareness to cancer. We are holding a raffle to bring awareness to domestic violence. The list goes on and on. Do you really need to become aware that child abuse or domestic violence is a horrific, unacceptable act? Do you really need to become aware that cancer is a problem? Awareness is not needed. Everyone is aware of these and other types of problems. The media floods the airways 24 hours a day with such stories, all presented in graphic detail. Awareness is not needed.

3 Keys to A Better Life and a Better World

If you are reading the news or watching TV, may I suggest one word: STOP. You already know things are not the greatest right now. You don’t need to be reminded over and over. And over and over. Yes, the joys of 24 hour news. You may not be able to do anything about upcoming taxes or tensions in N. Korea but you can make 3 adjustments to your life that will greatly improve it. By doing these, with enough people and enough time, they will greatly improve the world. For now, lets just stick to you and me. Key 1. Foster an attitude of Rugged Individualism.

Jack, a Python and the Race That Almost Wasn't

Twenty feet before the finish line and in the huge, boisterous crowd, I see a hand. Of course, I know that hand. The long fingers, ideal for playing the piano. It is the same hand that has comforted me when needed over the past 15 years. The same hand that provided a push or a soft touch is now waving frantically in a sea of hundreds, hoping I would see it. Instantly, I recognize it and move toward the barrier and am rewarded by a vision of the hand's owner. Lisa, complete with ever present smile is right there at the the finish line, the completion of my 9th Disney marathon.

How One Minute Can Change Your Life

Though I have been earning a living via the Internet for the past 14 years, I am by no means a computer geek. Competent to a degree? I can go along with that but a career with Microsoft is not in my future. When the network went down last night, needless to say, I was not very happy. Leaving aside the fact that it was Sunday. . . and Sunday night football. . . . when you do earn a living on the Internet and the system goes down, it needs to be addressed ASAP.

Reverse Engineering Your Life

I have an ongoing “debate” with one of my relatives. According to her, I do too much. I need to relax and take it easy. That is what life is about. For her. Admittedly and proudly so, I am a very active person. I teach and train in the Russian art of Systema, learning Japanese Sword, Filipino Combat Systems, Shodo (Calligraphy), run marathons and other events, am a regular at the gym, learn Japanese and write and read a great deal. Add to the mix a family and a business. For me, this is what life is about.

Making Footprints

There is a prevailing notion that the path to your desired results or dreams has already been traveled by someone. Simply identify the person, find out what they were doing, “hack” it and you too, will have the identical or virtually identical results they produced. Or so the infomercials tell me.

Is It The Area that Causes the Problem?

Have you ever noticed that certain (geographic) areas seem to attract people of similar mindsets and similar actions? No I am not talking about people who fish or surf being attracted to the coastline. It is not that obvious a correlation. It is along the line of this — certain cities or town are active, lively, creative and attract people of this mindset while other areas are bland, dull and somewhat dormant and inactive.

Following the Code

Our Saturday training is much different than our regular training. Approximately 90% is physical while the small remainder is instruction based. (Contrast that with our regular training which is about 80% instructional and only about 20% physical, meaning pushups, situps, squats, running etc. Time simply does not permit much more than 20%.)

Why Cross Training is a Bad Idea

Swimmers should cycle. Runners should bike. Cyclists should do aerobics. On days off, do something differently. You have heard it or perhaps even tried it. Little by little, people are finding out it is a bad idea. Here’s why. . . . The best workouts are the ones which are specific to the sport or specific to the event. To prepare for a 5K, running intervals at a fast (almost 5K) pace is better than a 10 milers. Running is better than biking at preparing for running competitions. Biking is better than running when a century ride is in the future.

The Lost Art of Keeping Your Word

Each morning I gaze at the eastern horizon, and if the sun keeps its promise, I keep mine. ~Robert Brault Finding individuals who are consistent in keeping their word is becoming a rarity today. Accountability seems optional at best. Why is this happening so often? Here are a number of reasons:

The Joy of Silence

The art of Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) has been a dramatic vehicle to assist me in living with the joy of Silence. Each stroke of the brush, from the very first strand that touches the rice paper to the very last bristle that leaves the paper, requires complete focus and concentration. The end result sometimes is a quality piece of Shodo. Sometimes not. At all times, I receive the gift of Silence.

More Reasons To Avoid the 6 Meal A Day Suggestion

A few months ago, I wrote a post detailing why the oft-repeated suggestion of 6-8 small meals a day is disastrous. In short, the pancreas is designed to release insulin 2-3 times a day. Anytime food enters the system, the pancreas releases insulin. As such, the 6-8 meals per day overworks the pancreas. In fact, some researchers (such as Dr. Brian Peskin) suggest that this way of eating actually is one of the causes of diabetes. In my experiences with patients over the years, I would agree with this theory.

Doc Wellness's Top 10 Foods to Avoid

Another title for this blog post would be: AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Below are the foods that must be avoided if you wish to live in the world of optimal health. Actually, they should be avoided if you wish to live. . . . 1. Soda and so-called “energy” drinks like Red Bull. The amount of sugar contained in these substances is disturbing. Also the caffeine will wear out your adrenals quicker than almost anything. 2. Hot dogs 3. Pork/Ham. These foods are 2 of the major causes of arthritis.

Someone or Someone Else

Interesting discussions today. I realize the more “popular” the Law of Attraction, personal responsibility and the notion that we create our lives become, the less things change. The same people who believed this and applied it for years, believe and apply it today. The same people who live in the world of victimhood and do-it-for-me world, may spout off the catch phrases, but never apply it in their life. Today, someone is going to a protest. Someone else is going for an interview or starting a new business.

The Heart

Oriental medicine refers to it as the Emperor. Natural Medicine views this as 50% of the immune system. Art and literature see this as the source of love and compassion. We call it the heart and this is the topic of this blog. The heart is considered to be the most important of all the internal organs. Its functions include the following: 1. Governs the blood. The heart is the major organ that circulates the blood throughout the 70,000 miles of blood vessels (yes, that is seventy thousand miles). (The lungs are the second.)

7 Musts for Every Endurance Athlete

When it comes to endurance events, everyone prepares a little differently, has their favorite recovery products and unique twists and turns. Here are some universal truths. 1. Prepare for the event. This one is obvious. . . for most but not all. I am amazed when I hear that someone is doing a major event like a half marathon or greater and is ill prepared or take a whole month or 2 to get ready. This is the ultimate act of both foolishness and selfishness.

What Sumo Teaches Us About Being Fat. . . or Thin

I have been involved in martial arts for over 25 years. In all this time, the oddest martial art I have ever seen is Sumo. As many know, it is 2 VERY large men, standing across from one another, ramming into each other like head on collision between trucks. It is strange indeed. It is also very educational from a nutritional perspective.r

Depression and Why You Need Herbs

I read an extremely interesting article about anti-depressants at http://www.healthreformwatch.com/2011/07/14/auditing-studies-of-anti-depressants/. There were a number of opinions stated by the author that were powerful. They included: - “. . . . much of what medical researchers conclude in their studies is misleading, exaggerated, or flat-out wrong.”rn- “. . . . research that indicates that placebos can often be nearly as effective as drugs for conditions like depression. “rn- “. . . . in some studies, 40 percent of subjects not receiving medication get better.”r

How You Walk and What it Means

I received an interesting email from a patient regarding low back pain. The email read: “As you know I have been suffering with severe back pain for years. Before I met you, I tried just about everything and no relief. After having a nutritional consultation and following the protocol, about 80-90% of the pain is gone. What I notice now is that there is quite a bit of stiffness and I have a hard time exercising. The MRI was negative and chiropractic adjustments have done nothing. Any ideas?”

The Lungs/Skin Connection

One of the unique functions of the lungs is that it has a direct impact on the skin. How? The lungs receive fluids from the spleen and spread them to the skin, all over the entire body. This gives the skin (and to a large degree, the hair) nourishment and moisture. If the lungs are strong and healthy, the skin will have luster, the hair will be glossy and sweating will be normal. If the lungs are deprived of nourishment, the skin will be dry, often cracking and/or flaking.

Particularly these days when the economy is so poor, the ideas contained in the book are even more applicable. That is why I had such high hopes for the follow up book, “The 4 Hour Body.”

108 Day Project

It always amazes me how great things can arise from difficult experiences. Like the Phoenix, light always shine more powerful than the dark. Such was the case a few weeks ago. My wife and I were struggling with some personal issues. It seems like every piece of news that we heard was negative. Our normally buoyant spirits were dropping like a lead balloon. It was out of character. It was damn scary, truth be told. A few days past and we finally began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As our spirits lifted, an idea sprung forth.
