TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE

I am reminded by fellow coach Phil Evans of the following truth. The most common 'theme' that I introduce to new clients when working in the Life Coaching realm, is the critical importance of being true to oneself! It's just so darned easy to get into doing everything for everybody else, but sadly neglecting that important person in the mirror. Yep, too darned easy to put everybody else first; and eventually something will kick our butts as it tries to alert us of the need to look after that person also known as ME!

IS ADDICTION A DISEASE? GOT IT?

IS ADDICTION A DISEASE? I certainly have my own thoughts on this question. Understanding the “disease” nature of addiction, because it gave me peace of mind, saved my life. Trust me; I’m not trying to be dramatic. From being free of active addiction for over 16 years, I know that the disease can be kept in remission. It took action on my part to get to the place where things are in remission. I belong to several professional “discussion groups” and offer you the following from one of them:r

EGO RUNNING WILD!

EGO RUNNING WILD! Thought to Ponder . . .The ego seeks the destination; the soul seeks the jou eyr What a deadly conflict I had going on for so many years, my ego searching for the destination and my forgotten soul seeking a journey! It made it hard to live in this skin of mine; seeking and achieving things that were never enough, yet a constant feeling of dis-ease inside. I remember well the day that a marriage counsellor suggested that alcohol and other mood altering activities may have a role in the breakdown of my marriage; the most important relationship in my life.

DO YOU OWN YOUR LIFE?

Do you own your life? "The meaning of life is to give life meaning." -- Ken Hudgins When we own our lives, we accept what we've inherited and the experiences we hold in our memories. We also claim our right to create new conditions if we're not happy with what's come before. We assume responsibility for changing what does not suit us. We acknowledge our own special talents and skills, and truly comprehend our right to enjoy the journey. In short, we embrace the meaning and purpose, the mystery and the beauty of our lives. Do you feel that you own your life at the moment?

Out of Balance?

Dick Cavett was quoted as saying "It is a rare person who wants to hear what he doesn't want to hear" and Oscar Wilde said "To love ones self is the beginning of a lifelong romance”. Emerson said "Where there is no vision, people perish". I hit a point in my life where balance became a real issue. In working with clients and others I know I'm not alone. There was a balance in daily routine which made allot of sense. I certainly lived erratically. This area was addressed thoroughly at the treatment centre I attended many years ago.

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT

ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT After a number of recent conversations and happenings, coupled with self reflection, I think the biggest change in my life over the past number of years has been an attitude adjustment. Years ago, it was far too easy to fall into the negative. One of my symptoms was frequently knocking others, finding the bad in them. Another was a sense of gloom that could take over the sunniest day. The gloom through me frequently into procrastination, I just couldn’t get things done unless my back was against a wall, and even then I was often late with “stuff”.r

MASSIVE INSECURITY

MASSIVE INSECURITY I just read an article by a writer named Lisa Kogan on this topic. It was a great reminder that massive insecurity is an affliction suffered by a huge cross section of the entire population. We with addictions think it is unique to us. I have believed for years that while many with addictions have MI, it is shared by millions of others. There is that word I hear in oh so many places. NORMAL. I don't think there is any such thing. There are many who have chosen a path of life recovery; a path that addresses Massive Insecurity.

Attitude: It's Everything

Attitude. A great word and it reflects in every aspect of our lives! "And we have ceased fighting anything or anyone -- even alcohol (or other addictions or destructive behaviour). For by this time sanity will have returned. We will seldom be interested in liquor (Or old behaviours). If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame. We react sanely and normally, and we will find that this has happened automatically. We will see that our new attitude toward liquor (an others negative living habits) has been given us without any thought or effort on our part. It just comes!

Family Relationships

How many of us have been negatively effected by bad family relationships- past or current? There is no required school for parenting, and we don't choose our families. In my own case, family relationships had a huge impact on the negative feelings I had toward myself; and these started way back. I came from a family that was not healthy for me. My parents had lots of love, but were not able to show it. They argued and my father, on binges, drank too muck. My mother has never taken a drink, so who will ever know if she had a problem? By today’s norms, I was an abused child.

MAKING A TOUGH DECISION

MAKING A TOUGH DECISION No apologies to anyone. I believe that the "12 Steps" are a great model for good mental hygiene for EVERY HUMAN BEING. Have people had success dealing with a myriad of addictions using the steps? You bet they have. 12 step programmes have played a role in millions of people recovering from addiction. I can tell you first hand from client results; the foundation of the steps has helped not only "addicted" clients find a better life, but has helped clients suffering from chronic depression, self-esteem issues and a constant state of procrastination.

In Praise of Differences!

My Life Coaching mentor, Dr. Randin Brons, Has once again hit a chord with this week Idea Generator. Celebrate differences. "Souls don't have races or sexes or religions. They are beyond artificial divisions." -- Brian Weiss Intolerance of differences always exists in people who don't know who they are, people who don't have a strong sense of their own authentic self; the soul within. Intolerance is rooted in fear. The basis for having a strong sense of self-esteem is to replace our unconscious idea of basic unworthiness with a conscious knowing of our fundamental inherent goodness.

DO YOU ENGAGE IN VIOLENCE?

Do you engage in violence? Time once again to give thought to points raised by my coaching mentor, Dr. Randin Brons, in his Idea Engineer. At first blush, this headline evoked an immediate “NO”. Violence is not something I’ve ever really engaged in. Then I reread the articles and quotes, and began to think about what violence really includes. "It is our basic right to be a happy person, happy family, and eventually a happy world.
