How to Deal with Criticism.

Criticism is a fact of life. No matter what you do people will, at some stage, have there opinions about it and feel the need to voice it in a way that doesn't always seem positive. Some people tell you to ignore criticism, others say it's an opportunity to grow and learn...just what is the best approach to dealing with it? Well, in my opinion, both of the above suggestions can be useful. Sometimes criticism can be to put it bluntly, completely inaccurate and useless and other times it can highlight useful information and insights that can help you develop as a person.

Social Anxiety & Self Image.

In 1960 a cosmetic surgeon called Maxwell Maltz wrote a now well known personal development book called psycho-cybe etics. In it he describes his fascination about a strange phenomenon he experienced time and time again throughout his career... After performing cosmetic surgery to patients over several decades he found that some people experienced a radical shift in the way that they felt about themselves as a result of the plastic surgery. Amazing changes would often occur quite suddenly and dramatically in a person's personality when they changed their face...

Universal Attractive Vibes - Having Positive Intentions.

When you are with someone you can sense whether or not their intentions are positive. Whether their focus is on adding value to your life or taking it away like some social leach. As the world famous personal development speaker Tony Robbins says, there’s two ways to have the tallest building. One is to tear down all the other buildings and the other is to concentrate all your efforts on building the tallest and strongest building you can.

How to feel mentally & physically stronger in 5 minutes.

When I was a teenager one of my idols was Bruce Lee. I actually knew nothing about the guy other than the fact he could break wooden doors with his bare fists and defeat a large group of weapon bearing ninjas single handed. As a teenage kid this was more than enough to trigger a deep fascination that left me keen to emulate him in some way. After much persuasio I managed to talk my parents into taking me to karate lessons...

Breaching the Social Anxiety Matrix

Some of you will have undoubtedly seen the film 'The Matrix' starring Keanu Reeves... Some of you may even have understood it! For those of you who haven't seen the film the basic premise is that the earth and human beings have been taken over by machines who, in order to survive, have farmed the human race in one giant complex where they use their body heat to power their own existence.

The First Step in Overcoming Social Anxiety.

Feeling unnecessarily anxious, nervous or scared around people is a much more common problem than people like to admit. There are a wide variety of thoughts and theories as to where this phenomenon originates. Genetics, child development, chemical imbalance and nutrition have all been cited at some stage as playing their part in the make-up of what can often, on the surface, appear a complex problem…

Attractive Vibes - Internal Happinness

The subject of happiness often splits the opinion of many people. Is it something we chase and obtain by achieving our goals and dreams or is it our birth right…there irrespective of what we do? In western culture we tend to adopt a ‘build and maintain’ view of the world. That is, if we want something (like money, good career, quality of life etc…) we have to go out and build it from scratch then maintain and develop it through time. In essence it’s a fundamental driving force of the capitalist world view.

The Myth of Perfection & the Power of Flaws.

There is often the misconception that to be effective in the world you have to appear like some slick, good looking, fast talking salesperson who projects a vibe of success and perfection in everything they do. You'll be pleased to know (unless of course you are some slick, fast talking salesperson) that this is absolutely not true. In fact striving to be perfect in the way you look, what you say and the way you say it can sometimes have a detrimental effect on your level of social influence...

The Blissful Place Where Anxiety Doesn't Exist.

I was reading a book on Somatics (a way of increasing flexibility, health and happiness by movements of the body) and I came across the term 'sensory-motor amnesia' (SMA for short). SMA is the term used to describe the memory loss of how certain muscle groups feel and how to control them...This happens naturally to everyone as we grow older and results in poor posture, bad backs, strange muscle pains and premature ageing...

How to Connect with People through their Values.

Put simply, a value is something that is important to us. Values are the why behind any behaviour that we do as human beings. Whenever we take action and do something we do it for a reason. These reasons are what we refer to as values. A value is an emotional state that we are either attempting to move away from or attempting to move towards. They reflect our beliefs about what is right and wrong and are the rules, principles and standards that we live by.

Where Social Fear really comes from...

The origins of Social Anxiety, shyness and fear have often been the subject of debate. Where does it really come from? A person’s genetic make-up, bad parenting, a chemical imbalance or learning and experiencing. If you have done any research on the subject you will find that among experts there is a general consensus that the cause is multi factorial and most if not all of these elements play a part at some stage. Being from an NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and change psychology background it’s my opinion that the vast majority of the problem comes from learning and experience.

How to Build Confidence.

There’s a common misconception that people have that seriously hinders them from being relaxed and confident around people. It’s the limiting belief that they have no control or influence over the feelings and emotions that they feel throughout their body. That they just kind of happen…and they have no way of knowing whether they will feel calm about their first day in a new job or confident going on that first date… After all we have good days and bad days right? And we just have to hope that the good ones coincide with the challenges we face? Wrong!

How to Talk to Strangers

It’s often been said that the number one fear that people suffer from is speaking in public. What is not quite as well known is that the second most popular fear is speaking to strangers. You only have to walk about during the day in a busy city to appreciate this. A buzzing metropolis of people going about their day with little awareness or apparent interest in the people they pass. It’s hardly surprising though given that we are culturally conditioned from a young age to believe statements like, ‘Silence is golden’, ‘Wait to be properly introduced’ or ‘Don’t talk to strangers’.

Do You Compare Yourself to Other People?

One of the most intriguing patterns that most people do at some stage is to look at someone else, (usually someone who they think is wonderful, good looking and successful) compare them to themselves and start listing all the reasons why they are better than them and why there is no point in even trying to be as good as them. This is a commonly used strategy for a lot of people and it stops them from trying new things before they even begin. I remember speaking to a friend of mine at a dinner party who has an interest in modern art.
