Control Yourself, Control Your Life

“No evil propensity of the human heart is so powerful that it may not be subdued by discipline.” ~ - Seneca (Roman philosopher, mid-1st century AD) The secret of self-control is using your faith as an anchor. No matter what your faith may be, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Christian, Hinduism, or ...

Coping with Difficult Times in a Recession

No individual government leader can pull our country, or any other country, out of the recession the world is in. It will take guidance, planning, and cooperation amongst a broad coalition of people and that includes us. Remember that old joke, "a recession is when your neighbor losses their ...

The Certitude of Uncertainty

It is always interesting to watch the talking heads on TV speak with such certainty about what would happen if we follow their advice on the economy, foreign policy, war, industry, and just about anything else they feel compelled to pontificate on. They apparently (if you believe everything they say) even understand how we should best conduct our relationships with family and friends.

Are You on the Express Lane to Debt?

There are always plenty of articles and commentary written about rapacious lenders and banks taking advantage of the “little guy” by giving him too much credit too easily and then when most inconvenient for the borrower they hit him with higher interest rates or some other financial disadvantage. I’m not about to defend big banks but like any “addict - pusher” relationship you can’t have one without the other. Credit cards and charge cards are our most common type of short term credit.

Focused Prayer is a Spiritual Power Tool

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21 New International Version (NIV) There is nothing bizarre or mysterious about the power of focused affirmative thought and prayer. It has been proven over and over again, both in Christianity and in the other major religions as well, to create tremendous results in individual lives. In fact if you read scripture you will see references to fervent focused prayer and meditation throughout. What do you think Jesus was doing when he went off for time alone?

Biblical Principles at Work in Your Financial Life

Never forget that helping others is a blessing both to the giver and the recipient. An integral part of anyone’s march to solvency and balance in their life should be helping others. Can you really benefit your community by only working for and thinking of yourself? With that being said, debt and poor personal financial management prevents you from helping anyone or any organization consistently and effectively. Debt in and of itself is not wholly bad. The misuse of debt is what is really appalling.

Random Observations on the Current Economic Crisis

Along with the rest of the world, I am watching the United States economy as well as the world economy. Here are some sobering statistics for certain groups from a recent survey by MarketWatch.com WORKING FAMILIES 60% of Americans are not prepared for today's crisis. 50% could only go one month without a paycheck before falling behind in bill payments. 25% will fall behind immediately if missing a paycheck. Our savings rate as a country was negative for most of the decade. It is now up to 3%. That is good, but not where it needs to be which is around 9 or 10%. So keep saving!

Belief Helps Us Overcome Discouragement

Discouragement is not a terminal disease. It is an ailment that we have all had at one time or another but it can be healed. Whenever I get discouraged I reconnect spiritually by reading some of my favorite biblical passages as well as using prayer. Some of the great leaders of ancient Israel understood that there were at least four major reasons for discouragement. First, fatigue sets in and you get tired. Human beings wear out and to go beyond what you can physically do without collapsing you have to use stimulants, which can open an unwanted door to addiction.

What Qualities Represent a Great Leader?

It's popular to believe that a cigar-chewing, crew-cut, fire-breathing son-of-a-gun, gets the most out of people and is the prototype of a great leader. You do occasionally find instances of this but let's take a moment and think of modern US history from WWII forward. Does this description fit ...

Store Credit Cards and What You Should Be Aware Of

While you were doing your Christmas shopping last month did you give in to the lure of the sales clerk offering you the opportunity to “Save 15% today and have no interest payments for 18 months if you open a credit card account with us?” This probably sounded great while you were reflecting on the amount of money you were spending during the holiday season. But….

Using Biblical Principles to Conquer Fear

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 2 Corinthians 4:8 (King James Version) Many people are frightened these days and trying to figure a way to keep from losing their purpose in life. Finding your purpose is your first step in the fight to conquer your fears. Your reason for living isn't to spend all your time and energy on your job, or striving to purchase bigger and better homes or cars, etc.

How to Save Money Using Debit Cards

Did you know that using a debit card instead of a credit card can help you save money? If you are old enough to remember when debit cards didn’t exist you probably recall being at the grocery store with a cart full of food and household products and realizing that you had way overshot your mark. You could either write a check if you were confident that there were sufficient funds to cover it, pay cash or ask the checker to remove items. This meant an eye-rolling delay for the people in line behind you, but it had to be done.

Forgiveness is a Spiritual Necessity

“Without forgiveness, there’s no future” - Desmond Tutu We must forgive the people who’ve hurt us and it has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not they deserve forgiveness. They most likely don’t deserve forgiveness, but we don’t deserve it either. So if forgiveness isn’t necessarily deserved then why do humans pursue vendettas across the generations, encourage future generations to fight one another with a goal of stamping each other out, bankrupt themselves defeating their perceived enemies and sow salt into the earth so nothing will grow in their land, etc ?
