“Hey, dude, I’m a teenager. Whaddya expect from me? Kids my age tend to be a little raunchy at times. We like to hang with our buds and make fun of people. And video games . . . man, I live for video games! Pops says they make me angry — some of the games are a little violent, you know? But pops doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He says that I should fill my head with positive stuff and that I should start treating people with respect. He says what goes around comes around. He says stuff like you are who you associate with, and you get from the world what you put into the world.

Silent Communication Impacts Relationships
Silent communication affects a relationship with the suddenness of a lightning bolt, the drip, drip, drip of a leaky faucet, or the enduring radiance of a diamond. Look at the examples below, and you’ll see what I mean. A man slowly moves to one knee, reaches into his pocket, and retrieves a small box. He looks up into the eyes of the woman he loves. In an instant, she realizes what this silent communication means. With the suddenness of a lightning bolt in the nighttime sky, her boyfriend is about to propose marriage.

Awash in the Digital Age
There she was, walking along in the mall, focused on the cell phone in her hand. The security camera was watching as she approached the area of the fountain and the pool filled with water. Other shoppers were in the area but they too were focused – on where they were walking. In the background were storefronts, with people entering and exiting the shops. It was a normal mall scene.

Improving Personal Relationships
The richness of life comes from our interactions with other living things. But many of us don’t interact with living things as much as we used to. For example, as I write this article it is appearing on my monitor, but on my companion monitor there is a screensaver. The screensaver image is of a beautiful green rolling meadow lying under a blue sky dotted with white fluffy clouds. The grass in the meadow seems to be leaning a bit, so I believe that there is a gentle breeze pushing at the grass. I see a few yellow dots in the foreground of the screen.

RESPONDING TO A CALL TO ACTION
9-year-old Christina Taylor Green had lofty dreams. She wanted to help other people. She traveled with her neighbor in Tucson, Arizona to see her Congressperson, a woman, a role model, someone from whom she could learn about public service. You know what happened. President Obama spoke at a memorial service for Christina and five others who were killed that day in Tucson, and the Congressperson who was gravely wounded, and the numerous other people who were shot and injured. He asked each of us to “live up to her expectations.”
