It’s important to know the break-down regarding why the words “Zealous” and “Zen” were chosen as the topic for this article. It might be best to explain the definitions of both to see how they “fit” in this author’s perspective. “Zealous” means to be actively interested or enthusiastic about some pursuit or topic. “Zen” is the practice of experiencing wisdom in the attainment of enlightenment. It is not based so much on theoretical knowledge as it is on direct self-realization that comes through meditation and the “dharma” practice. The idea of “dharma” comes from ancient texts in India that state there is a divinely chosen natural order of things. It says that in order to have happiness, justice, and social harmony in the world, humans must live in a way that reflects the requirements of that order.
Zen is a practice that allows for a calming, deep acceptance of life as it is. It is not about condoning hatred, anger, and violence. It is about being dedicated to the pursuit of living from the highest self so as to be a reflection of goodness to others. The more we live an outward example of peace, justice, and harmony, the more lives we touch and the more those lives create a ripple effect, spreading that mindset across the world.
The concept of being zealous sounds as if it is a more outspoken, highly-boisterous state. That is not necessarily so. If being enthusiastic and actively interested in Zen creates a more peaceful world, there is a lot of positive thought about that idea. Being enthusiastic is not always about being boisterous and loud.
It’s a slow process, but as time passes, more and more people are becoming aware of the power of positive thought. They are becoming more aware of the benefits of acceptance and belief in the strength of a unified front. If we could just impress upon people that the negative sentences and thoughts need only be flipped over and made into positive sentences and thoughts, there would be a lot quicker evolutionary movement on this planet. The world we wish to see would be a reality. As Gandhi once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” It isn’t too difficult, really it isn’t. Just change the perspective, adjust the attitude, walk the talk, and watch the world transform.
