Tantra for many years was overshadowed by the more familiar reiki teachings, and it was only recently when certain celebrities came forward and professed their undertaking in tantric rituals that it came to the fore. The downside of this publicity however, was that many people considered tantra to be solely based around love making, and wrongly assumed it was similar to the kamasutra teachings.rnIn fact tantra has many similarities to yoga or Zen, in that it is considered a path to enlightenment both spiritually and physically. Originating from India over four thousand years ago it can hardly be considered a new concept, even though it is now all the rage so to speak in western society.rnThe basic concept of tantra is to help you realise your full potential as a human being, both in mind and body. This is not easy, especially considering that tantra is thought of even now as some form of mystical subject that is difficult to define. If a poll were conducted today, the largest response about knowledge of this subject would be the sexual aspect. Not surprising really when you consider the publicity it has generated.rnIf I was to say it was a concept that unites the universal energies of the mind, body, spirit and soul then it wouldn’t be much clearer in our minds. An easier solution is to describe tantra as the letting go of all previous mental, emotional and physical or cultural conditioning we have allowed ourselves to become burdened with. In turn we allow new life energies or thoughts and practises to flow through our minds and bodies. To achieve this state, we need to undertake meditation, exercises, rituals, dream awareness and our sexuality. In short all activities involving the use of our minds and bodies. These are done in a special way which allows us to become enlightened and learn from the erring of our past and move into a beautiful new future.rnMany consider tantra in its purest form to be all about enjoyment and pleasure; others prefer the fact that it builds self esteem and create a feeling of contentment in a person, which in turn enables people to not only love and feel better around themselves, but to also feel this way towards others. As you can see tantra is not all about sex, but about all of your life’s experiences and how you are able to express these. The added bonus of course is your sex life will improve, dramatically I might add.rnThe uniqueness of tantra, is that it is the only spiritual practise that actually states sex is sacred, not a sin, even outside of marriage. It actually promotes lovemaking as being extremely beneficial, not only in terms of the exercise, but more in terms of the spiritual connection that two people can make with each other. Many people who have made use of the tantra teachings have publicly stated how much stronger their relationship has become; some even profess it saved theirs.rnWith regard to tantra, I’ve put a website up to enable people to learn a lot more on the subject, please take the time to have a look and hopefully learn more. On the site I go into greater detail on the sexual aspect of tantra.
