Normality means to maintain balance, without any excessive indulgence or scarcity. Normality is required in all facets of life: starting from our daily routine and right into our relationships. Maintaining normality, in any aspect, promotes not only physical and mental, but emotional and spiritual well-being too. Having a sense of balance keeps us genuinely happy and contented, and allows us to experience a life free of bother and distress. In stark contrast, abnormality in life brings huge misery. Too much of even a good thing is considered abnormal. Obsessiveness inevitably results in restlessness and unhappiness. How to pursue normality in your everyday life 1) Prioritize the need for normality in life. First and foremost, realize that in life, normality is the way to go. Make a firm decision in favour of having normality in your life, and then remain sincere to your decision. You will soon see good results coming in. 2) Temper your expectations in your relationships. When you have too much love or affection for someone or something, after a while, these emotions will fuel expectations. And when these expectations are not met, your excessive love will induce hatred towards them. Therefore, try to balance your affections. 3) Do not have extreme likes or dislikes Aim for a moderate or a normal view about everything. Choose something or someone you especially dislike and try to recognize one good aspect of it. Focus on this good aspect and see if you can change your perspective. By changing your perspective, you will find it is not as hideous as you thought! Gradually with practice, you will find that as your dislikes reduce, you are feeling happier. 4) Do not overthink on any subject. Excessive pondering will inevitably result in anxiety and a loss of perspective. Ultimately, it ruins our mind and could even lead to a mental breakdown. It is fine to think up to a certain point but over thinking could cause extreme paranoia. Therefore, whenever you feel you are getting over anxious, try to recollect yourself at the earliest and remind yourself to gain a normal perspective. If you find this difficult, seek help from friends – or professionally. 5) Don’t try too hard to please. Don’t be overly concerned about making someone happy as this can be a never-ending task. Instead, try making sure you never hurt anyone through your thoughts, speech and actions. And see everyone as a Pure Soul, because that is what the reality is. 6) Remain ethical in all you do. The abnormal pursuit of material possessions makes us unethical. When we seek material things, we behave greedily. As a result, we may even hurt others if we do not manage getting it with ease. Our desires lead to rise of anger, false pride, deceit and greed. Learn from your experiences and you would know that it is not the materiality of the world that yields happiness, but small and simple things make the biggest difference to our life. 7) Ease your routine. Consider all the things that compete for your time. Make a list of things that must be done, prioritize them and take them one by one. Look for getting to a normal speed at work, too much speed will add to your stress levels, and too less a speed could build up stress when tasks don’t get complete. Meditate daily at least for one hour. This will help increase your efficiency. 8) Achieve a work-home life balance. Work while you work, and have an aim to spend quality time with your family and friends too so that you fulfill their expectations as well. While you’re dealing with family issues, do let your manager and colleagues know about it, and try to get their full support for it. rn9) Eat healthy and be physically active. Have a balanced diet, do normal exercises and remain active. Studies show that physical and mental activity, when done in normal limits, improves our overall health and wellbeing. 10) Take out time to do things you find relaxing Pursue your tastes, hobbies and preferences, but in moderation. If your hobbies and tastes are on the creative and constructive side, you will experience more happiness in your life. 11) Communicate with your well-wishers. When normality is lost, life tends to go out of control. Talk it out with your trusted friend, faith leader or family. Sharing what you are experiencing will make you feel better and will give your well-wisher the clarity to help relieve your stress. The prime reason for dissatisfaction and pain in one’s life arises when one loses normality in life. But we generally tend to lose sight of this primary reason for our unhappiness and conveniently keep putting the blame onto others or outside events, when in fact the problem is us. Achieving normality is the key to contentment and joy in life. In the words of Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan, an enlightened being “In order to be happy in this world, there is only one path, that of normality. There is no unhappiness if normality is maintained in everything that you do; in eating and drinking, in getting up-sitting down, in moving around, in working”.
