Do Women Have a Midlife Crisis?

Here is a shocking fact. I didn’t always like women. In fact I couldn’t stand most of them. But eventually I realized that their seemingly perfect lives were not so different from mine and not perfect either. We had similar problems in a different shade of grey. Here is an example: I was a single working mother, searching for my perfect fit and upset at how difficult that was. The flipside of this was a woman who dedicated herself to her family and two kids who now felt trapped because she gave up so much.

How to Build a Business

Many of my private coaching clients are women who want to build a business. But they don’t really know where to start and don’t have a formal education in how to go about setting up their own shop. Let’s go through the steps that are needed to build a successful business. It doesn’t always take a lot of money to start one. Here is a great article on The $100 Startup. It all starts with an idea.

Motherhood: The Ultimate Transition

All these years later, I still think about what kind of mother I used to rnbe. It took me three years to become a real one after the birth of my rndaughter. Motherhood is much harder than most will tell you or admit rnto. I couldn’t understand why people said that it was so worth it. I was 32, broke, divorced, my small business in shambles, and the fight for rnmy own survival made being a good mother very difficult. I loved my daughter, of course. Gina was sweet and feisty, a natural performer who liked to sing and dance around the apartment.

Learning to Forgive Is Chicken Soup For The Soul

It’s not a good sign when the first news of the day means dealing with death. But it got me thinking about the huge impact forgiveness can have in our lives. My father’s brother passed away the other night while I was out celebrating the 4th of July with friends. The two brothers were opinionated men. Both charming, forceful, very smart, and they took on life with maximum force. One went into politics, becoming the mayor of a big city in Germany while I was still living there, and the other, my father, was the CEO of a dairy company in another city.

The Paradox of Being a Woman

While I can’t be entirely sure about why that is, but all around us, women are being held to superhuman standards. The common assumption in our culture is that women who are successful in their careers are also great at everything else they do. Or they should be. Their homes look like Martha Stewart’s, they’ve had kids but look like Heidi Klum (who’s had 4 children and wears a size 2) and they can cook up a fantastic gourmet meal to rival chef Gordon Ramsey—and do it with a smile.

Is Leaning In and Doing More Really The Answer?

The vast majority of working women today want a more realistic way to achieve success. They are currently America’s most famous female executives. Marissa Mayer, Yahoo’s CEO and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg are today's biggest role models on juggling business and family. Both are wives and mothers of young children and competing for their attention is nothing less than leadership of two of the biggest tech companies in the world.

Whatever Happened To Sisterhood?

How to make women your allies, not enemies It used to be called sisterhood, the feeling of kinship with other women that fosters support and community. Perhaps you’re fortunate to have a support group of wonderfulrnwomen, but many women don’t. Frankly, I don’t see much sisterhood around today, except maybe in the HBO hit series Girls, where the spirit of sisterhood is in and on the air. http://goo.gl/Vp H8 In business, I’ve seen how badly women treat each other. Gossip, back-biting and sabotage are rationalized as justifiable means to achieve the end—career advancement.r

Can Women Have it All? Here’s What’s Missing In The Debate

By Beate Chelette The recent Atlantic cover story on whether or not women can “have it all” has certainly hit a national nerve. The week after the article came out it had received more than 1.1 million online views. Women and men all around the country are registering their objection or approval of author, mother of two and former State Department official Anne-Marie Slaughter’s premise that the 70s feminist mantra of “having it all” is, in reality, not so easy—and maybe not even possible unless women push for changes in society.

***Are You Ready For Your Own Success?

I have seen it happen to many of my coaching clients. They work hard, put in the hours, follow their business plan and then their business grows. Sometimes almost too fast and they are not prepared for their own success. Who would have imagined? You’ve heard the saying: Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. That also applies to growing your business. What many professionals don’t realize is that rapid growth is the most dangerous phase in a business because all of a sudden you are adding more clients, which means more work than you might be set up for.

The End of the Pity Party

After my divorce, and with business bad, I was flat-out broke and had no idea what I was going to do. By myself, with neither family nor anyone else to help me, I was devastated. My daughter Gina noticed at a young age that other kids at the playground were playing with their dads. She’d shoot longing looks at them. She’d ask me later why her father never took her anywhere. It didn’t matter that I myself did, that the two of us traveled all over the world. Because nothing fills the void from an absent parent.

When It’s Right, It’s Right

Problems sometimes turn out to be unexpected gifts, so look for them. By Beate Chelette Can’t all this move faster, I asked my herbalist the other day as I sat impatiently on the treatment table? I am smack in the middle of being rewired by nature and Steve is helping me through the symptoms of perimenopause, a biological stage that can’t be avoided—or rushed—despite my insistence. With the utmost patience, Steve reminded me that my pace is probably exactly the pace it needs to be.
