Our Ropes and Chains

Many years ago I had the privilege to participate in Dr. Deepak Chopra’s “The Soul of Leadership” program. It was a wonderful and inspiring program filled with information about synchronicity, spirituality and leadership. Dr. Deepak Chopra shared with us how elephants are trained in India. When I discovered the book: UNCHAIN THE ELEPHANT; Reframe your thinking to Unleash Your Potential, by Erik Wahl I thought about it again. This elephant metaphor has often been used to illustrate the power of our limiting beliefs:

How to Set an Intention

By creating an intention, we become clear about what we want to accomplish and at the end of the day, we know how to measure our progress. When we set an intention, we connect with the deeper meaning of our desires and we pause to make our actions meaningful. This allows us to progress towards our life purpose. An intention evokes feelings, raises our energy and opens us up to infinite possibilities.

The Power of Our Beliefs and Self-Image

Our views and habits have developed over time and we typically underestimate the power of our ingrained beliefs, the ones deeply rooted in our subconscious mind. They affect how we think, act and ultimately, affect our results. It’s not necessarily all negative. Actually our programming can be very powerful and enable our success; however, it can also limit our ideas of what is possible in life.

Let Your Uniqueness Shine

We all have unique skills and talents. Think about what you enjoy, are good at, what inspires you and what brings a smile to your face. Our passions are an indication of our skills and talents. Interestingly, when we admire and even envy someone, it’s just a sign that we have the same skills, often dormant, waiting to be expressed. For example, if you admire inspirational speakers, you too can be one once you apply yourself, create the intention and follow diligently through with your actions.

Look Up - Release the Happy Hormone

The way we sit, stand or walk affects our mind and therefore our results. Likewise, the way we feel affects our posture and movements. “There is an inner and an outer side to everything,” as Thomas Troward said. Your Posture and Your Mood? Think about a happy and successful moment, a moment you were at your best. How did you sit and stand? Remember your smile, the excitement in your eyes visible to everyone. Now you can recreate that inner feeling, being at your best, by the way you hold yourself, move and smile.

How to Embrace Feeling Uncomfortable

In his Forbes article, “Why Feeling Uncomfortable Is The Key To Success,” Sujan Patel shares, “Routines may make you feel at ease and in control, but what a constant routine really does is dull your sensitivities. Set Yourself Free

How often have you doubted yourself? And how did it affect your life, work or business? I can relate to this and until I learned to believe in myself and create a “success image” of myself, I was unable to neither use my full potential nor bring out the best in myself. It may seem strange but some people are born with an unshakeable belief in themselves while others struggle in this area so much. The good news is, you can reprogram your mind and develop that definite belief in yourself step-by-step.

Beyond the Comfort Zone

Let’s find out what holds us back from exploring and experiencing the many new things we could do to grow and bring more joy and fulfillment into our life. Today in our known environment, we are comfortable and continue with our same routine. With no or just little effort we can stay in our comfort zone and continue to do the same, continue the status quo. Our habitual activities bring us the same results. ‘Rubbish in = rubbish out’ says it all. We wonder why we do not get different results.

Are You Trying Too Hard?

“There’s a small fly burning out the last of its short life’s energies in a futile attempt to fly through the glass of the windowpane. The whining wings tell the poignant story of the fly’s strategy — try harder. But it’s not working. The frenzied effort offers no hope for survival. Ironically, the struggle is part of the trap. It is impossible for the fly to try hard enough to succeed at breaking through the glass. Nevertheless, this little insect has staked its life on reaching its goal through raw effort and determination.

Change & Letting Go

If you are ready to move beyond your comfort-zone and let go of the old, here are few mighty steps you can take: 1. Beyond Your Comfort-zone When we do something new or change locations and social surroundings, we get out of our comfort zone and into the unknown. We have no frame of reference for the new experience, which causes us excitement, and typically uneasiness and discomfort. As a matter of fact, we can experience physical disease when we decide that we want something different or embrace a new opportunity, but need to break our habitual behaviors and step out of our comfort.

When an elephant baby is born in captivity, the owner uses a rope or chain to tie it to a tree or post so it cannot escape. Once the elephant is fully grown, it can still be tied with the same rope or chain and will not escape, as it believes it cannot. The elephant’s mind is conditioned to believe it cannot escape although his body is easily able to. (Erik Wahle, Unchain the Elephant)

How Do Results Happen?

Most people strive to have more and be more - we want more money, rewarding work, enhanced relationships, optimal health, fitness, wellbeing and so much more. Clearly, we are programmed to measure our effectiveness by what we see. When we see our results, for example our bank account, our profit, our weight or whatever we are working on - we measure our success, our accomplishments and even measure ourselves accordingly. If the results are not what we want them to be, we keep thinking about the negative results, the lack of progress and it fills our conscious mind.
